Chevys Fresh Mex - La Cocina Fresca - Episode 167

You might not have realized, but Chevys is in the middle of reinventing itself and it all starts with putting the "FRESH" back into Fresh Mex. We take an exclusive sneak peek at the new menu of a pilot program called La Cocina Fresca, where the kitchen is smack dab in the middle of the restaurant for all to see. What's more, they make certain dishes right in front of you, just the way you prefer it. This review is a little longer than most, but you won't want to miss it.

In April 2012 they deputed a gluten free menu but in August 2012 they decided "that it was too difficult to guarantee that these products will be 100 percent gluten-free as not every restaurant has the space and materials at this time to separate gluten products from others. To maintain a consistent product and not endanger anyone from a potential negative experience we have decide to pull the gluten free menu but will do our best to accommodate any special needs."

My family went to try out Chevy's yesterday. It didn't go so well. Our server seemed to have no clue about celiac disease or food allergies. I have celiac and am gluten free. My 4 year old son is allergic to dairy, sesame, nuts, and eggs. First I asked the server for a gluten free menu and she said she didn't think they had one but she'd check. She came back with the GF menu. I asked if I could eat the chips and salsa she brought to our table. She didn't know but went and asked. She said I could have the salsa but not the chips. She did not offer anything to dip into the salsa. I don't know why the chips would be unsafe since they should just be corn chips and were supposed to have a separate fryer. My husband asked what our son could have and she reported that they had nothing safe for his allergies. ??? Luckily we had brought him his own snacks just in case. I don't know why the beans or rice or chips or many other things should have been unsafe for him. I ordered a beef and a chicken taco with the corn tortillas. I asked the server to be sure to indicate gluten free on my order. She said she has to enter all the info into the computer herself so that would be covered. A different person brought out or dishes. My daughter had order the tacos with wheat tortillas. The server who brought them did not know which tacos were for which of us. He was not aware that I was GF. He did not know what gluten was but when my husband told him gluten is in wheat flour he did indicate which tacos had the wheat tortilla vs. the corn ones. So, I didn't feel very secure that what I was eating was safe. Also, the corn tortillas are quite small and since I couldn't eat the chips I needed more food. I asked to have more corn tortillas brought out. By the time I got those we were almost finished. Not the best experience. It is nice that they are trying to accommodate our needs. And the owner shown in your episode seems knowledgeable, but unless they can properly train the staff it is not very helpful.
